For over 70 years, Omaha has played host to the College World Series, which is arguably America’s most underrated championship event. Maybe more than any other sporting event, the College World Series is synonymous with its host city. For college baseball teams across the country, there’s one word that describes their goal for the year, Omaha. I grew up going to games at Cal State Fullerton, where the outfield wall is inscribed with, “Only 1,544 Miles to Omaha”. Hardly unique, references to Omaha are ubiquitous across the country’s elite college baseball programs.
I’ve had Omaha on my bucket list for nearly 20 years, since the first time I watched the College World Series on TV. After such a long build up, I was slightly worried it wouldn’t live up to my expectations. But in true Midwestern form, it delivered as advertised. Not only is the atmosphere electric, but the format of the tournament turns Omaha into a melting pot of cultures. Each year, 8 teams make it to Omaha, bringing with them fans from all over the country. Add in the Omaha locals, and you’ve got a recipe for an amazing crowd.
Having the College World Series in Omaha has other benefits as well. Unlike the Final 4 or College Football National Championship, which are typically held in big cities, the College World Series doesn’t feel at all corporate. This is a championship event that regular people can afford. Unlike other major sporting events, you’ll see no price gouging in Omaha. Ticket prices are very affordable, you can find some as cheap as $30. Additionally, ancillary costs such as hotels, food, and parking are all very reasonable.
Maybe that explains why people come back year after year. In just a few days, I met multiple families who have been coming to the College World Series for 20, 30, and even 40 years. Some were Omaha locals, but there were plenty of others, who come each year from around the country. And I specifically mention families, because Omaha is exceptionally family friendly. Everyone coming to the College World Series understands the environment, and behaves accordingly.
While Omaha is a great host city, what ultimately makes the College World Series great are the games. Baseball is America’s pastime, and the College World Series represents the pinnacle of amateur baseball. When in Omaha, you’ll see teams loaded with MLB prospects, and the talent is evident on the field. Also the College World Series is similar to March Madness, in that huge upsets are fairly commonplace. All in all the gameday experience is amazing, and in many ways it’s superior to MLB games.
In some ways the College World Series defies description, and has to be experienced to be fully appreciated. The atmosphere is one of a kind, with Omaha singularly dedicated to college baseball each June. The College World Series is very deserving of inclusion on any sports fan’s bucket list, and if you ever get the opportunity to go, take it. You won’t be disappointed.
This might be my favorite post so far. I love how you explained the experience. Definitely on my bucket list:)
Yeah, I’ve got to get to Omaha for the College World Series, too, someday. The great thing about baseball is that the worst team can beat the best team on any given day, so upsets are the norm. When in Omaha you’ve got to get a steak, too. Best corn fed beef you’ll find anywhere!
