Made a quick trip to Cumberland Falls in Kentucky and it was well worth it. Known as the “Niagara of the South”, the falls are 125 feet across and descend nearly 70 feet. Pictures really don’t do them justice, and they need to be seen in person to appreciate the enormous scale. Also lost in photos is the immense noise generated by the falls. Taking in the scenery, while listening to 25,000 gallons per second rush over the falls, is an oddly relaxing and enjoyable experience.

I have driven by the falls several times on road trips, but never took the time to visit, now wishing that I had. The park is conveniently located right off of I-75 in Southeastern Kentucky and the falls are a couple minute walk from the parking lot. Super easy to get to and well worth the detour if you are ever in the area.

Fun Fact: The falls are the only place in the Western Hemisphere where you can regularly see a “moonbow”, a lunar rainbow produced during full moons.

  1. Seem to recall reading about the “moonbow” effect at one of the falls in Yosemite, but I could be wrong. Regardless, it wouldn’t be this easy to access. Nice spot to relax!
